Worcester City Guide |
| Worcester is located in the county of Worcestershire and has the river Severn running through it. Worcester cathedral, which is fairly large, overlooks the river in the middle of the city. Its estimated population in the 2002 census was 93,204. It dates back to Roman times and was first founded in the 1st century. It was abandoned between 407 AD and the 7th century when it was populated by the Saxons. Charles II was defeated in the battle of Worcester here in 1651. The town took a Royalist point of view and was awarded the pseudonym “The faithful city” in honour of this. It is also home to the three choirs festival every three years which originated back to the 18th century and is reputedly the oldest festival in Europe. |
