Wolverhampton City Guide |
| Wolverhampton lies in the county of Staffordshire in the west Midland s of England and was only granted city status in 2000. It gained its name from Lady Wulfruna, who, in 985, founded the town. The rest of the name comes from the term heaneton which means the ‘town on the hill’, so the name is a combination of these terms. The south east part of the city was dubbed the ‘Black country’ during the 19th century due to its coal mines and production there. It is because of this coal and also iron production that Wolverhampton became quite a wealthy town in this period. Its claims to fame include producing the pop group Slade, the singer Beverlie Knight and drum and bass artist Goldie. |
