Wakefield is situated in West Yorkshire and has a population of 316,415. However its population density is relatively low at just 934 per sq km. It was made a city in the year 1888. Its population is predominately white in ethnic origin, with 97.7% being white and 1.4% being S.Asian.
There is some dispute about the origin of the city’s name, some believing that it is a derivative of ‘Wacca’s field’, but it is not clear who ‘Wacca’ is. Another more likely suggestion is the old English word ‘Wacu’ meaning ‘a wake’ or ‘watch’ combined with ‘feld’ meaning field i.e a field in which a wake was held. It was known in the Domesday book as Wachefeld in 1086.
