Sunderland is located in the north east of England in the county of Tyne and Wear. It has a population estimated in 2002 to be 278,958 and a population density of 2,028 per sq km. In 1992 it gained city status, which was the year of the fortieth anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne. The city is strongly a Labour constituency and has been since 1974, with compelling vote victories for Labour in this region. The city houses one university, the University of Sunderland. The ethnicity of Sunderland is predominately white with 98.1% White and 1.0% S.Asian.
