Stirling is situated in central Scotland and had a 2001 estimated population of 45,115. The city was granted city status by "the Queen" in 2002. It is a town with rich history and grew around old medieval buildings and its castle. The city held sigmnificant strrategical importance during the Roman occupation of England as its had a hill that was easy to defend. It was at one time also the capital of Scotland. Its famous sons include Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, King James VI of Scotland and Mary, Queen of Scots. The city also has housed the University of Stirling since 1967. The university has become a centre of research, with students from almost 80 countries.
