Salford is a city as well as a borough of Manchester. It houses the University of Salford and is renowned in England for its gang violence. The river Irwell runs through it. The estimated population in 2002 stood at 216,178 with a relatively large density of population standing at 2,224 per km2. With these figures it stands at 56th largest city in the country. The city is mostly white in ethnicity, with a small proportion of S.Asian descent. The actual figures stand at 96.1% White 1.4% S.Asian. The modern city of Salford is a Labour constituency at the time of writing, 2004.
