Portsmouth City Guide |
| Portsmouth is located on the south of England in Hampshire. It has an approximate population of 186,000. It was once the biggest naval base in the world and oused many of the Royal Navy’s ships, however it has gone into recent decline. Many claim the origin of the city name to be simply from the “port’s mouth”, but others still claim it to be from a chieftain named Port and the Saxon derived word “mutha” and this is a disputed claim. Portsmouth has a rich history and dates of note include the year of 1338, when a French fleet bearing English flags stole unnoticed into the dock and burned many buildings down, raped and slaughtered the population. |
