| Nottingham is situated in the East midlands of England and on the river Trent. The census recorded a population of 284,300 in Nottingham. It is famous for its lace-making, the supposedly exceptional beauty of its young women, and its association with the legendary outlaw Robin Hood. It also has reputedly a high ratio of females to males, however official figured record it at 1.015:1. Nottingham was founded as a Saxon settlement and was later captured by the Danes (Vikings). A castle was contructed in the 11th century and the town grew around the castle. A large network of caves gave home to the pooorer populace and these were used in the second world war as air raid shelters. These are now a popular tourist attraction. |
