Norwich City Guide |
| Norwich is situated in the county of Norfolk, in the east of England. The city is twinned with Rouen in France, Koblenz in Germany and Novi Sad in Serbia. The city has a rich historical background in that it has been in th hands of the Iceni, the Romans, the Anglo-Saxons, the Late Saxons, the Vikings and the Normans. The word Norvic appears on coins minted during the reign of King Athelstan (early 10th century AD). During the Norman conquest the city was the largest in England. A large wool trade generated immense welath in the area in the middle ages and resulted in it having the highest numnber of medieval churches in western Europe. The Norwich emblem is the Canary, which is the same for their football club, Norwich city F.C. This originated from the Flemish refugees lfeeing from the Spanish persecution in the 1500s. They brought with them advanced skills in textiles and their pet Canaries. |
