Newport City Guide |
| Newport is Wales’ third largest city and is situated in the county of Monmouthshire in the south of Wales. It had a 2001 population of 137,011 and a population density of a relatively low 721 per sq km. The river Usk was the reason for the first settlers in the bronze age, when fishermen populated the fertile area. The city’s name is Welsh is Casnewydd-ar-Wysg which translates as 'New Castle-on-Usk’. This is so because of the castle built in the 12th century, which is ‘new’ because of the relative age of the ruins in nearby Caerleon. Newport is also well known for its sport. It is home to a formidable rugby side, which was the only side to beat the omnipotent All-blacks of 1962-3. |
