Newcastle upon Tyne City Guide |
| Newcastle upon Tyne Newcastle upon Tyne, often called just Newcastle, is situated in the North east of England and has a population of approximately 259,000. It was given its name in Norman times after they constructed a ‘new castle’ in 1080, which still exists. An important part of Newcastles development came from the import of coal from Northumberland. It’s major industries in the 19 th century being shipbuilding and heavy engineering. There have also been many innovations in the surrounding area historically, including Stephenson’s work on railways resulting in a change in the economics of transportation. During the 20th century , these industries declined and now the main employment a short distance from the city centre is office and retail. The original impoversihed city centre dwellings providing working class housing for shipyards and other heavy industries. |
