| Lisburn is situated in the Northern Irish county of County Antrim, which is in the east of Northern Ireland. Its name in Irish is Lios na gCearrbhac. It has a population of an estimated 110,000 and a population density of a relatively low 243 per kmē. There was a massive fire here in 1707 which destroyed much of the town buildings. It was also the site of negotiations between Lord Hillsborough and ben Franklin over the War of Independence in America. The city was given city status in 2002 by Queen Elizabeth II. The city is mostly Protestant with 62.8% of the local population and only 33.4% being Catholic. It lies on the river Lagan upstream of Belfast and is a commuter city to Belfast. |
