Lincoln City Guide |
| Lincoln is a beautiful historic cathedral city in Lincolnshire with 2000 years of heritage, architecture spanning several different eras, and a new modern university and a vibrant arts and events programme, with festivals, concerts, art and sculpture exhibitions and more. The city itself is full of classic examples of historic architecture. 2000 years ago Lincoln was a Roman settlement and fortress and some of its remains still exist today. Newport arch is a Roman gateway still in usage which dates back to the 3rd century AD. It is reputed to be one of the oldest Roman archways in the country. Lincoln also has a Normans castle which was built on the grounds of the former Roman fortress in the 11th century. Today the castle is a popular tourist attraction open to the public all year round and houses a copy of the 1215 Magna Carta. There is also a Victorian prison in the grounds. It is a fascinating experience to see relics from such different periods in English history, all in one place. Lincoln's cathedral originally also dates back to the 11th century, but an earth quake and a fire destroyed most of the original building in the following century. The destroyed areas were then rebuilt in the 13th and 14th century although the some of the original building was left intact. Other local attractions include The Usher Gallery, the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, Whisby Pits nad Waddington and Scampton airfields and the Cadwell Park motor racing circuit. |
