Leicester (pronounced lester), is a city in the midlands of England. A population of 279,921 was recorded in the 2001 census. It is next to the M1 motorway and has acces to the Midland Main Line railway. Leicester’s major industries include food processing, hosiery, footwear, knitwear, engineering, electronics, printing and plastics.
Leicester is one of the oldest cities in Egland dating back 200 years to Roman times. The historic city centre is mainly Victorian in origin, with later developments smoothly integrated. There is also a Castle, Cathedral, church of Mary de Castro, Guildhall and Jewry Wall.
In more modern times it has won the European Sustainable city award (1996) for being the Uk’s first Environment city.
