Ely City Guide |
| Ely is a cathedral city situated in Cambridgeshire, East Anglia. Despite its city status it has a very modest population of approximately 14,000. It is often referred to as the Isle of Ely because until the Fens were drained in the seventeenth century, it was in fact an island surrounded by marshes. Although the city is relatively small, Ely's main attraction is its spectacular mediaeval cathedral which was started by William I in 1083, completed in 1351 and can be seen from miles away across the flat Fen landscape. A number of ancient monastic buildings surround the Cathedral and have been wonderfully preserved, still in daily usage. The city is a delight to explore - and full of surprises. Ely is also famous for one of its former residents, Oliver Cromwell who lived there for several years after inheriting the position of local tax collector in 1636. The house in which he lived is open to the public and features exhibitions and period rooms. According to locals the house is haunted and Cromwell himself can sometimes be seen around the place. |
