Edinburgh is situated in the south east of Scotland and has an estimated 2001 population of 449,240. This makes the city only the second largest in terms of population in Scotland, behind Glasgow, despite the fact it is Scotland’s capital. It also has a population density of 1,702 per km², which is a relatively large figure.
The city dates back to Roman times in the 1st century, which is when Edinburgh castle was built. There was an expansive period of building during the 18th century and this resulted in Edinburgh reputedly being the most splendid architectural city in the world. It is also home to the Edinburgh festival, which is a popular destination for tourists.
