Durham City Guide |
| Durham is a relatively small city situated in the north east of England, and also 15 miles south of Newcastle. The river that flows through the city is called the river Wear and is enclosed on three sides to form what is known as Durham’s peninsula. Durham has a population of approximately 87,000. Durham’s university has several colleges on the peninsula and on the other side of the river Wear in Elvet hill. Historic buildings include Durham cathedral, built in 1093 and is arguably the finest in England. Being a hilly city, Durham is also home to Durham castle, which is also the home of University college. These two buildings are jointly designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. |
