Dundee is situated in the east of Scotland. It had an estimated population of 145,463 in 2001 and its population density was 2,424 per km˛, which is relatively high. It has a total land are of 60 km2 and is ranked 60th in this respect in the districts of Scotland. Historically the production of linen from the flax found locally was an important industry in the area during the 18th century. Among its claims to fame include the building of Captain Scotts ship ‘The Discovery’ in a special dock made for the purpose. Also Dundee was among the first to have railways built in Scotland, with the first being opened in 1831 (The Dundee and Newryle).
