Derby City Guide |
| Derby is a large city situated in the East Midlands of England. The city has historical significance as it was the birthplace of some of the most notable achievements during the Industrial Revolution. The first-ever factory in England was set up in 1702 in Derby - The Silk Mill. Today it is Derby's Industrial Museum and is dedicated to many of the businesses which flourished throughout the industrial revolution period. Today Derby is a bustling multicultural city with extensive shopping and leisure facilities. Some of the original companies which grew up in the industrial revolution still exist including Rolls Royce who manufacture their car and aircraft engines at their Derby plant. There is a wide range of restaurants and local pubs pride themselves on selling real ale. The Brunswick Inn, recently turned into a brewery claims to be the first purpose built railwayman's pub in the world. Sadler Gate in the town centre is a popular destination for pub crawls as it is one narrow avenue full of pubs. The Assembly Rooms is one of Derby's most popular entertainment venues located in the centre of Derby City. It hosts a year round programme of music, arts and entertainment, including an orchestra, comedians such as Frank Skinner and Lee Hurst, rock and pop events, pantomime and drama. The venue is also hosts Derby University's Graduation ceremonies. |
