Carlisle is in the north west of England, only 10 miles from the border with Scotland. It has areas of particular historical interest, including a castle and city walls and law courts that are of architectural interest.
The castle was of particular military importance when England and Scotland were spearate kingdoms and is still relatively intact. It was built in 1092 by Willima Rufus and once served as a prison for Mary Queen of Scots.
Hadrians wall runs close to the city and much material on this can be found in the Tullie House Museum. This museum is an award winning museum situated in the lanes (Carlisle’s main shopping area).
Carlisle has the M6 motorway to link it to the rest of England in the southern direction, and the M74/A74 links it to the north.Carlisle also has rail links with the West coast railway line.
