| Cardiff is the largest city in Wales and also the capital. It derives its name from the Welsh language and its Welsh name is Caerdydd, which is made up of caer, meaning fort, and dydd from Antonius Didius - the Roman leader who built a Castle there. The city is situated in the county of Glamorgan in the south of Wales. The city has a thriving port, known as Tiger bay and is one of the largest in the world. It had a period of decline when it was known as the Cardiff bay, but is now a popular centre of nightlife and entertainment. Cardiff ha a 2001 estimated population of 305,353. The city is home to a University and two colleges belonging to the University of Wales. |
