Canterbury City Guide |
| Canterbury is a major tourist city and its world-famous cathedral alone attracts upwards of a million visitors. Canterbury's name derives from the Old English Cantwarebyrig - literally "fortress of the men of Kent". Situated in Kent, Canterbury is now Kent's only city, despite Maidstone being the county town of Kent and being much larger in both size and population. Nevertheless Canterbury is a remarkable city not least for its spectacular cathedral, its historical significance - it was the scene of the murder of Thomas a Becket in 1170, and the burial place of King Henry IV and Edward the Black Prince - and its religious importance as the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, primate of the Church of England. |
