Cambridge City Guide |
| Cambridge is most famous for its World famous University. The city itself is quite small but is undergoing rapid expansion particularly in the suburban areas. Cambridge is the regional centre of the county of Cambridgeshire and is surrounded by dozens of small satellite towns and villages. In the 1970s Trinity College founded the Cambridge Science Park in order to encourage the success of local hi-tech industry and attract overseas investment. Since then, Cambridge has been home to a large number of high-tech businesses, some of which were start-ups by people connected with Cambridge University. The city is now widely regarded as the high-tech capital of Britain and one of the main technology centres in Europe. Tech giants such as Microsoft and Sun Microsystems have opened up offices in recent years, and Cambridge is sometimes dubbed "Silicon Fen" - after Silicon Valley in California, fen being the name for the flat marshland in and around Cambridgeshire. |
