Armagh is situated in the south of Northern Ireland. It lies in the Irish county of County Armagh and is the capital of this county. St Patrick reputedly founded it in 444 and it has remained the capital of Ireland in spiritual terms ever since. The city’s name in Irish is Macha's Height, or Ard Mhacha. It is home to both Roman Catholic and Protestant Archbishops. The distribution of catholic to Protestants in the city is reported at Protestant: 50.0% and Catholic: 48.7%. It has a population of 54,263 estimated in 2001 and also has an extremely low population density at a mere 81 per km˛. the city also has an observatory, called Armagh Observatory, which was built in 1790.
