Inverness City Guide |
| Inverness is situated in the north east of Scotland and is the only official city in the Scottish Highlands. The river Ness has its mouth here and flows from the Loch Ness, home of the famous Loch Ness monster, or Nessie. This is the popular tourist spot where millions of visitors come each year to see if they can spot the monster. Inverness’ name originates from the Scots gaelic Inbhir Nis, which means ‘mouth of the Nis’. The population estimated in 2001 was 51,000 and it was officially granted its city staus in 2000 by the Queen of England. The city dates back to the occupation of the Picts. The castle in which macbeth was said to have murdered Duncan, according to tradition is situated to the notrth east of Inverness. |
